The Venerable Ambrosian Library is a universally recognized cultural excellence. A large number of Greek, Latin, vulgar and other Eastern languages codices were donated to the Library. Today its patrimony counts more than a million printed books, including 40,000 manuscripts, 2500 incunabula, 12,000 parchments and almost 12.000 drawings (by Rafael, Leonardo and many others). Among its many treasures is the unique Codex Atlanticus, the most complete collection of Leonardo da Vinci’s manuscripts.
The organ of the Duomo of Milan is perhaps the largest in the world for the number of pipes, but certainly the most important in terms of timbre performance and versatility. Its history began in 1400, practically with the birth of the cathedral itself, to transform over time in step with technical developments. What we see today dates back to 1938. Still today, with its 16,000 barrels and five-level keyboard, it represents absolute excellence.
On May 12, 1935 The Archbishop of Milan, Blessed Cardinal Ildefonso Schuster, consecrated the Basilica of the Seminary of Venegono, thus inaugurating the "New" seat of the Seminary desired by Pope Pius XI.
From the most evocative points of the Duomo of Milan, to the Basilica of Saint Ambrosius, Monsignor Marco Navoni, Doctor of the Venerable Ambrosian Library, historian and scholar of the life of Saint Ambrosius. He tells of the life of an extraordinary man who gave all his possessions to the poor, who played a fundamental role in the conversion of Saint Augustine, who guided the Christian community with faith and justice for over 20 years, through difficult conflicts with the imperial authorities.
Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster, a man of our times, Cardinal of Milan from 1929 to 1954, his Episcopate has gone through the darkest moments of the 20th century. Schuster opposed racial laws in 1938, was close to his diocese in the war period. He lived with intensity the reconstruction, he made 5 pastoral visits.
Like few other thinkers, the great intellectual of the 1800s, Antonio Rosmini (1797-1855), philosopher and theologian, statesman and founder of an order, can be of great help to us. A thinker of European rank and with far-sighted prospects. The basis of his thought is man, the person, the common good, just those values we need today. The Recovery of the Greater SPIRE of the DUOMO of Milan
year: 2018 runtime: 7min director: Marco Finola
After the painful fire in Notre Dame de Paris, the story of the maintenance of the Spire of the Duomo of Milan is topical. The Duomo was founded in 1386 and from that date requires continuous maintenance for the marble and wooden parts and for the precious interior decoration. The recovery of the spire maggiore is perhaps the most important work completed in recent decades, the operation is not only aesthetic, but also structural. Engineer Mörling describes in detail the delicate intervention that foresees a particular tubular grid in order to make the self-supporting spire, just in time for the works.
